On my limited knowledge, picked up from some very experienced writers we worked with....Get to the point of the gag quickly - the audience likes to know what they are listening to. Don't waffle (hard to do sometimes, sketches take a few rewrites to distill it down). Don't complicate a sketch by trying to put too many angles into it.
And no, visual gags don't really work on radio but you can do sort of visual gags if you get the right sound effects or use the words to conjur a mental image.
