'To gauge' basically means 'to measure'
and 'a gauge' is a scale of measurement - i.e: the French gauge scale that is commonly used to measure body jewellery sizes.
it DOESN'T mean 'to stretch', nor does it mean 'tunnes/plugs/other jewellery' i.e: you do not have gauges in your ears. you have jewellery of a certain gauge in you ears. yup.
