# Easy tiger!
It must be nice being so knowledgable about all of this - and the way you put it across? You ought to become a teacher!

I guess from the minute you used a computer you were "on the money"

I asked a question, wasn't looking for a row!:)

# Consider yourself educated.
I like Hedgehog. He's a bit of a cunt but he'll not abuse you for fun.
(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 0:44, archived)
# He's right though.
It's bloody awful.
(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 0:45, archived)
# I didn't mean to be agressive at you
just at all those idiotic companies that make those completely non-functional, and frequently malicious, "toolbars".

I certainly wasn't right on the money when I first used a computer, but that was 25 years ago (discounting the atari 2600). I've learned a couple of things since then :-)
(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 0:51, archived)
# Accepted
No offence taken I've got thick skin, but people on here are kind of aggressive at times or is that just the style of banter on here?

I'll get used to it :)
(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 0:53, archived)
# sometimes people here are aggressive
but lots of times it's just in good fun (with some bad taste thrown in), or just hyperbole (also with bad taste).

If you follow the board for a short time, you can probably spot which is which. The only things in general that really get people going in ernest is spam, trolling and blatant racism.
(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 1:01, archived)
# K K (Winks)
Will never be accused of any of that so I'll be ok

# Here is the internet lesson for the day.
To look at web pages you need a web browser.

You are using the one that came with Windows. Called IE7. It is not the best one to use for very many reason. Type why firefox is better than IE into google to find out why.

A "Better" and free alternative is called firefox. www.mozilla.com/en-US/

I also like a browser called Opera www.opera.com, it is also free.

A good reason to move to another browers is A. Most good sites work better with Firefox as it can do more things. It is also more secure as the geeks have gone mental getting this bit right.

After installing firefox I've had less trouble with the internet.

(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 1:07, archived)
# Thanks
Hedgehog & Waxdart. I am a bit "green" when it comes to computers so all this help is appreciated.
(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 1:10, archived)
# I second the recommendation for firefox
you'll probably like it, and it's definitely a better browser (though you'll probably not notice that much).
(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 1:17, archived)
# ok then you'l also need these
dont down load any rubbish some idiot post on a message board.

go here www.download.com and see if you can find it. There should be a safe version of what you are looking for.

Dont spend money on Virus checkers get this one
AVG Free - free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-virus/us/frt/0

Make sure you back up any files you want to keep on to a cd or DVD very soon.
If its 100% important you have these file, make a few copies. Keep one at someone elses house incase of a house fire. You can buy another computer; but you cant draw all those pics or buy back your itunes again.

(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 1:18, archived)
# this is all pretty much good advice
(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 1:23, archived)
# but again it's just
'some' programs that do a job, just not as good a job as others.
(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 1:37, archived)
# Firefox is an option not a 'better' choice.
there is nothing wrong with ie7 and claiming your 'internet' experience is less because of it is ridiculous.
The product is a multi national used by many. Also his Norton 360 integrations ( which are very, very good for the not so browser savvy ) will not work in Mozilla. It might be better to try and teach people how better yo use the products they have before sending them on to others they might not need.

I happen to use IE7 and FF3. This is the choice I made.
(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 1:16, archived)
# EVERYBODY's internet experience is WORSE because of IE
firefox isn't perfect by a long shot, but at least they're seriously trying.

Note that I'm not saying firefox is better for any specific user, but I like it just fine and the only site it doesn't seem to work for is the windows update thingy.
(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 1:20, archived)
# so as a legitimate windows user

am I supposed to be happy that windows update does not work? I need that, I have Vista, I need updates every day ( in fact I don't, I'm a subscriber and already on Vista SP1 but you know what I mean? )
(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 1:27, archived)
# clicking the "windows update" icon will work just fine
since it will start IE by default.

browsing to the window update site in firefox won't work, though.
(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 1:31, archived)
# it won't if you are using
Firefox by default. Or mine wont. I have open in IE to fix this but that's just me. I just get fed up of IE bashing, there is fuck all wrong with it and those that have the problems are too dumb to fix the problems.
(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 1:35, archived)
# there is fuck all wrong with it?
there's all kinds of things wrong with it.
I deal with that shit a lot. Sure you can sort of, more or less work around the problems but when you take a good look at the thing it's just a piece of willfully broken crap. Just about everything dealing with transparency is broken, event handlers are completely non-standard, inserting properties in the global object for every element with an id is brain dead and select options can't be disabled in any way, even though that has been standardized for more than a decade, just to name a couple of things off the top of my head.

(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 1:45, archived)
# just because it is no
longer working in the same manner as it used to is no reason to slag it off. It's become more proprietary, so? Work with it. There is no more proprietary software than Mozilla and people figured that out. Work with FF3 and tell me that is any easier.
I'm off to bed. I should not be defending things I don't give a fuck about, I just hate people slagging something off because it's 'de riguer'
Night night.
(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 1:52, archived)
# Firefox 3 Beta 1
not finished yet.

Beta is a testing phase name used in computers, not an end product name It will not work 100% as its a test version.

IE7 been out for over a year and its still not working right.

(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 2:00, archived)
# You have no idea what you are talking about
The reason firefox will not work is because M$ wants to lock everyone else out. Its called being anti competitive - all of Europe is taking M$ to court over it.

IE was stagnant for so long everyone got up off their arse and made their own products. The M$ copied the work of others and is now trying to lock other people out. Thats why firefox can't AutoUpdate windows.
IE4,5,6,7 is not very standard compliant and just by being so ubiquitous holds the the internet moving forward at a faster pace.

Please make a website or 50, then come back when you've worked out why there is so much M$ bashing. It take weeks to force IE4,5,6,7 to do what it should. And costs a fortune in development just so berks like you and middle management can keep the same shite.

If you knew a thing about sql injection, phishing you wouldn't use IE if they paid you.

# I have no idea what I am talking about ?
I did not make wild comments I stated fact. How is that.. oh fuck off on the list, I can't deal with people who clearly won't understand English.

# What fact did you post?

# I run Vista 32 on here
I run Vista 64 on the server and XP on the lads PC and laptops. Why?
(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 1:39, archived)
# "Better" in quotes
because its an opinion.

blar blar blar -

VISTA?
(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 1:36, archived)
# oh and now you think Vista is bad because
you heard it through the grapevine?
I'm running 2 Vista machines, one dual core and one quad both with 8Gb of ram. Vista has got better than ever for me, and since I have SP1 even better ( but only for fixing a slight network file transfer bottleneck )
I can't believe you want to bash someone because of IE7 when it is fine and then bash me for using Vista. You will all have to use it next year or be wallowing in old software.
(, Thu 28 Feb 2008, 1:44, archived)
# Erm
Dear M$ Monkey boy

Can use a computer, check.
Uses Linux, check.
Has render farm, check.
More that two machines, (looks at elecy bill), very check :(

Doesn't need M$ products, check.

TIT!
