better off having a transparent layer above the image in multiply mode. Desaturate the image and play about with the contrast and brightness then when it looks like your areas you want black are standing out well lower the opacity enough to still see and move to your upper layer. trace the areas you want black with the lasso tool and then go to select/modify/smooth and smooth it a couple of pixels then fill with black. This way you get complete control over the black areas. When that is finished place a layer underneath and fill it with your chosen negative colour.
