The marks are actually crosses are they not, albeit almost unintelligible ones
which was the standard way in which to display error bars on a graph was it not?

There are many ways you can do it.
Crosses would be an awful choice.

error bars denote a range
so tend to look like this I-----I except rotated 90 degrees.

Unless you have error bars in both axis, which he would in this instance.
In which case they would be more Nazish. And if you leave the end bars off they would just be crosses.
