It was originally called Aluminum over here as well
however while the british society of chemists decided that since so many elements ended with 'ium' it was only fair to change aluminum to aluminium to fit the rest, the american society of chemists decided to leave it as it was originally.
so it was actually a case of us lot meddling that time.

It was the British who put the C in scissors and the H in anchor
in an attempt to make our language appear more prestigious (i.e. more like Latin).
Our language is shit and complicated and not worth making a fuss over.
