I always find that with 3D (or anything graphical really) programs.
Usually involving uninstalling and reinstalling the programs multiple times when I go on and off them.

I need to work out how to use Bryce one day.
I used to use Max a lot, but haven't touched it in years now.

I think Max is better for actually modelling things, whereas Bryce is better for making nice shapes and getting decent and easily configurable renders.
Maya is a middle ground between the two.
I would recommend Zbrush if you want to make things which look complicated and nice though, especially if you are good at painting/drawing.
