but it's abbreviated from "1970s" so if you do use an apostrophe, it goes before it i.e. '70s.

Ahem, lecture over, sorry, but this is something that really riles me at the moment. Degredation of the English language and all that.

Apparently you don't use one in this situation (unless you're shortening 1970s to '70s in which case the apostrophe goes at the front).
