the original ep finished as your see them get out of the trench, but they felt it didn't work, the only place they could build the set for the end scene as it is was too large, and the cast would've been too far away, for an audience present to have seen what was going on, and after the first couple of rehearsals someone suggested getting out an old style camera to film in slo-mo

but it was the pan out to the fields that they didn't intend.
What happened was a lack of rehearsals on the polystyrene floor, so they all bounced when they fell, hence the ending they made.
I think that is right anyway, I am sure I saw Tony Robinson saying that....
