completely by accident though.the original ep finished as your see them get out of the trench, but they felt it didn't work, the only place they could build the set for the end scene as it is was too large, and the cast would've been too far away, for an audience present to have seen what was going on, and after the first couple of rehearsals someone suggested getting out an old style camera to film in slo-mo

I think you are right up to a point,but it was the pan out to the fields that they didn't intend.
What happened was a lack of rehearsals on the polystyrene floor, so they all bounced when they fell, hence the ending they made.
I think that is right anyway, I am sure I saw Tony Robinson saying that....

think you might be right (about the lack of rehearsals)and the fields was only decided on post-prod,
but don't think that the long shot was in the original script.
