some people(kitten and gibbon) swear by 'the gimp' which is free, but I've never used it.
photoshop come with imageready, which was created by god to bring light into the world, but is unfortunately quite expensive...
a few people use flash, which is a deeply, deeply evil way of animation tool, but incredibly powerful for some things.
get hold of photoshop/imageready if you can. bit difficult to get your head round to start with, but well worth it in the end.

yay!we swear by the gimp, mainly because it's free.

we have photoshop and imageready too now, but don't know how to drive them.
in gimp it's filters - animation - optimise and to reduce the colours which also helps it's image - mode - indexed - and in the box pick random numbers until you have the right balance between looking nice and not having lots of size increasing colours.

cool asas you probly guessed I don't have a danny la rue, but I made a load of psd's using Photoshop Shite (5.5 LE). I don't think you can animate with it, so I exported a load of gifs, and strung 'em together in Animation Shop.
A full on Photoshop/Imageready would let me animate? Kazaa overnight i think...
