There are plenty of authors who have helped people, plenty of books that have helped people. You don't need to give someone a heart bypass to save/change their life.

but take something like Catcher in the Rye. A lot of people claim it helped them through their disenfranchised youths and such. There are plenty of books out there that have helped people through difficult times in their lives.
