The monofilament-whip-in-the-thumb is a traditional feature in cyberpunk books and RPGs, not just Johnny Mnemonic. And that film would be a lot better if it wasn't Keantactu Reeves.

I remember 2 scenes from JM (actually saw it at cinema). The whip scene, and Reeves jerking his head back in shock in a silent "Whooooa!". I giggled at both.
