Unless you've panned it right the speakers should be at equal distance from your noggin.

Shoving paper and crap in fornt of the will screw up the sound (specifically the high frequencies)
and that's just to start:P

I measured mine

and they are about 1cm off on the left but that's because the left one is off the desk and sits a touch lower than it. I could put it on the desk but that brings the left a foot nearer my head and I'd have to do all sorts of messing with the sounblaster surround setup to fix that.

Would do.

I still to this day love going into places like Currys and looking at the hifis until I get a spotty yoof telling me how wonderful the particular model is.
Then point out to them that it's not been set up right and they have phase cancellation.

I forgot to say my sub is on the floor under my feet

and I like to put my feet on it when I'm playing something scary in the dark.
My surround monitors are behind me on the walls but off right now because one id abut 4ft away and ythe other about 12. I can only fix that with speaker stands but I'm happy with the 2:1 to be honest. It's very, very meaty but super clarity up top.

I have some

Aiwa SX F5 flat diaphragm speakers on mine fed by a 1980's Pioneer mosfet amp and 24 band graphic EQ. That being fed from an external Soundblaster Live USB.

It's not a bad sound all in all.

I just have a

JVC mini system thingy-ma-bob
but its a good little stereo
i just like to plug my laptop into it.

What Ohm per channel?

I still have a pair of early 90's JVC studio monitors.
Replaced the cones in about '98 but sound a dream.

8 ohm.

I also have a 1970's Marantz analogue amp in the cupboard that is the muts nuts. I like to play with that now and again.
