Player of games is the only one I've read with an awareness that it was hisit's rather good, in a slightly traditional-sci-fi way.

Player of Games is brill, Excession is fun, but to be honest, start from the beginning -Consider Phlebas (although technically State of the Art is I think for chronology, but that's just short stories)

There was a great radio adaptation of 'State of the Art' on Radio 4a couple of Saturdays back - 'twas very good.

All of them.Culture ones for preference... Consider Phlebas was his first SF, but it's not a particular fave of mine. I love Excession but any of the ones referenced in this thread will be worth a read.
