Hmm, is the shading in the wood-cutting, though, or in how you apply the ink?

I'm guessing you sculpt the wood, ink it up, and apply to paper. Here with three blocks (or four if the tail is on its own), so you have to get the registration right too.

I ink the block with a brayer -- a softish rubber roller. I lay down two strips of ink, brow and white for the body, and roll the brayer through them. The inks blend together to give you a nice gradiation. The green is done the same way, but i printed that first, and some of the white carried over on top of the green which actually looks kinda cool i think.
