... the H1 bit of H1N1 refers to the haemagglutinin which binds the virus to the cell... the 1 in H1 means there's only one of them (as opposed to H5N1 which has more binding sites) also as an influenza virus it's focussed mostly on the upper respiratory tract which is less harmful (as opposed to the lungs)...

exposure to this might make your immune system better equipped to cope with a mutated version depending on how close the mutation is to the virus you've been exposed to.
