I'll type slowly and try not to use big words.At hotels you hand in your key when you leave the building. In hostels you don't. As a result to protect against the cost of replacing the key if they are lost you charge a key deposit. Occasionally guests check out when the office is closed and just leave they key which means I get a fiver.
