I made a specific shape in 3dmax, welded a lot of vertices together where I wanted structure, then added lattice modifyer. That looked like this:

Close up (compression kills)

Then in photoshop, I took the alpha channel of the structure and made it yellow. On another layer, took the original, altered the levels and set blend mode to multiply at 25%. The radial line distortion was a halftone filter on the latter layer set as another 25% multiply. Then add bg colour and bob's your near relative.
