Heh! He wasn't as adored as Renato off Renee and Renato (aka the 'Just One Cornetto' dood).
I spent most of my Thursday afternoon composing a poker-faced, respectful, irony-free obituary for him, for his family's local paper.
I couldn't be remotely tongue-in-cheek about it at all, cos his widow, son, daughter and grandchildren are gonna have my words plop through their letterbox tomorrow morning whether they want it or not.
Had to play a completely straight bat. This was one of the most absurd afternoons of my life.
Tell you what, though - the man was absolutely loved on his home turf. Seriously. And, by ALL accounts, he was an absolutely lovely bloke. Watching the video, I realised: this may be cheesy as fuck, but it's also just about as sweet-hearted as it gets.
