Wow.
Then they shrank and became a tacky item you could buy in gift shops themed to whatever the particular tourist attraction was, and then they died out completely leaving nothing but sticky paper footprints adhering to the side of computer monitors where people had torn them off in a fit of gonk shame. What an odd bit of cultural history. Lots of little stories like this must pass us by unnoticed, and now that I know all about gonks from start to finish, I feel better about that.
