It could be a female that is incubating eggsOnce they lay their eggs, most female spiders will protect them until they starve to death (octopuses do this too)

the eggs are usually in a ball/cluster with web spun over themthe babies don't hang around for very long once they hatch (they're very cute, actually).
be nice to spiders; they eat a lot of the more annoying/destructive insects in your house
