The Mac operating system was developed to help people with learning disabilities use computers.Despite their reputation for being extremely stable, Macs have been known to fail catastrophically, most commonly due to their users dribbling onto the keyboard.
Apple couldn't rely on Mac users to use 'backup' to allow the system to be recovered in these circumstances, so they came up with 'Time Machine'. The exciting name appeals to the simpleton users, who will every now and then click on it in the hope that their computer will somehow magically transport them through time. The Mac User's carer can then restore the system for them from the backup points they have accidentally created.
