They introduced 'iTunes Plus',which were more expensive, better quality, DRM-free tracks.
Most tracks are Plus now.
It's still not as good as, say, 7Digital, who often offer FLAC (lossless) and MP3/AAC, with the option to re-download tracks if you manage to lose them somehow.
