From my ex's experience,
A good agent is really the only way to go. Vanity Publishing (doing it yourself) tends to end up just costing you money, and not getting a 'deal'.
Or should I have said 'Nope'?

I did self-publish a book,
but I did it through lulu.com, who print on demand, so no money has to be paid and they also list it on Amazon for free.
However, it's still rather depressing having to do all the PR for it.
Ta!

That's the thing, the marketing and PR get taken care of through the agent.
getting it to book fairs and the like.
