We used to use that at school as "code" for going for a, erm ... fag.
Wasn't the most imaginatative code, I grant you.

Also not a phrase best employed in New York.
'Just nipping out for a quick fag' tends to be misconstrued.

my brother-in-law is a tv comedy writer
he's written a book though, but his agent/editor chopped it about so much that he decided to self-publish

If you think you can turn your hand to drama, the BBC are great.
They'll give unsolicited scripts a read, and they're always producing stuff by new writers. Have a look around: www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/

From my ex's experience,
A good agent is really the only way to go. Vanity Publishing (doing it yourself) tends to end up just costing you money, and not getting a 'deal'.Or should I have said 'Nope'?

I did self-publish a book,
but I did it through lulu.com, who print on demand, so no money has to be paid and they also list it on Amazon for free. However, it's still rather depressing having to do all the PR for it. Ta!

That's the thing, the marketing and PR get taken care of through the agent.
getting it to book fairs and the like.
