I think his main problem is that
he's built up the image of an old bigot for so long, that there isn't much in the "he couldn't be racist" camp to counter-balance any sleight claims like this.
I personally felt he mumbled it more with an air of "it's political correctness gone mad that I can't just say it" than out of good manners (or, indeed out of racism).

this is the problem
his views are widely known and sometimes pointed at and laughed at, challenged and, sadly, somewhat agreed with.
