I'm no fan of Clarkson.
Probably punch him in a dark alleyway for unrelated offenses given the chance.
But if you hear "nigger" in that sentence, bravo, you speak Romulan.
For reference, this is somebody saying "nigger" properly:

Notice the slight intonation difference?

it's amazing what you can hear once your brain has been 'primed' for it by a headline. i'm no fan of clarkson but check out this led zep example.
( , Thu 1 May 2014, 19:13, Reply)
yeah but that is a real version of the old rhyme so the context is already there regardless of the headline. i liked the katy melua re-recording.
( , Thu 1 May 2014, 19:39, Reply)
i only a heard an indecipherable mumble. perhaps someone who can be arsed could run the audio through hypermammut.sourceforge.net/paulstretch/ or some such and confuse the issue further. clarksons' shtick is his bread and butter. this is just more publicity selling the product known as clarkson and nothing else.

copied and pasted from wikipedia:
Some older versions of this rhyme had the word nigger instead of tiger:
Eeny, meena, mina, mo,
Catch a nigger by the toe;
If he hollers let him go,
Eena, meena, mina, mo.[2]
This version was similar to that reported as the most common version among American schoolchildren in 1888.[9] It was used in the chorus of Bert Fitzgibbon's 1906 song "Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Mo":
Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Mo,
Catch a nigger by his toe,
If he won't work then let him go;
Skidum, skidee, skidoo.
But when you get money, your little bride
Will surely find out where you hide,
So there's the door and when I count four,
Then out goes you.[10]
It was also used by Rudyard Kipling in his "A Counting-Out Song", from Land and Sea Tales for Scouts and Guides, published in 1935.[11] This may have helped popularise this version in the United Kingdom where it seems to have replaced all earlier versions until the late twentieth century

Do I have time to start being racist this late in life? Or should I focus on anti-religious bigotry?

oh. my point is that given the rhyme's well known historical use of the word, he was deliberately sailing very close to the wind in order to provoke and be obnoxious. i normally spend my time on here defending this kind of non PC crap. i think i need a lie down.

huh. i thought all the outrage about mexicans was pathetic and fatuous, but when he made that 'slope' remark i thought that was gratuitous and a bit nasty. this is a very bad look indeed. how depressing for me that my opinion of him now aligns somewhat with all those right on bien pensant pinko twats that look for offence and victimhood everywhere. not sure he can weather this one out given his past form, but top gear is past its sell by date and has been for a while,so no great loss.

I hate to side with the complete shit of a bloke but that's a playground song that almost every kid in the UK sang without intending any offence
It's also possible that he's mumbling knicker (as in female underwear or possibly thief) which is what I recall thinking the word was when I was 7.
I imagine there might have been some uneducated racism when it was bastardised from the original Tiger text, but I'd guess what he was doing was pure unthinking repetition from his childhood.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eeny,_meeny,_miny,_moe
All that said, he does have a history for it, so maybe even though he mumbles it, he meant every word

I think his main problem is that
he's built up the image of an old bigot for so long, that there isn't much in the "he couldn't be racist" camp to counter-balance any sleight claims like this.
I personally felt he mumbled it more with an air of "it's political correctness gone mad that I can't just say it" than out of good manners (or, indeed out of racism).
