But the difference is, willful ignorance in the west results in very few consequences as we have enough people who know their arse from their elbow to keep things running.
In Africa it results in the deaths of thousands, and it could have been avoided if they had known some very basic information that we teach to the youngest of our children.

And since then there's been no lack of multinational corporations or pill peddlers making a good profit from the poor, uneducated people in African countries. Plus they've got their own problems, Liberia was in a civil war just 10 years ago. It's really no surprise at all that there's a lack of trust to western healthcare workers over there.
Also, it's really stupid to think that the epidemic wouldn't find it's way in a major fashion to just about everywhere if the seemingly exponential rise in cases is stopped real fast at it's source.
