It's not so much classist as regional dialectist.
I've had the same thing in America, trying to order butter. "What?" "Butter" "Say again?" "Butter" "Nope, sorry" "Okay then, budderrr" "Oh, sure!"
And then there was the time I asked for a can of Mountain Dew, nearly got lynched.
