But I'm wondering what the advantage of putting it on a robotic arm was. That last one in particular didn't appear to be doing anything with the available range of motion.

it wasn't a good demonstration
In theory it would give a smoother motion.
But you can also practice the camera path repeatedly before the final recording or do reshoots along the same path for effects work etc
