What ISIS Really Wants "The Islamic State is no mere collection of psychopaths. It is a religious group with carefully considered beliefs, among them that it is a key agent of the coming apocalypse"
A long but thoroughly interesting read published in the Atlantic

Can't they be more transparent?
(ie, more like Christians Against Dinosaurs, or even Jews Against Trilobites)

Interestingly the Kurds just describe them as 'gangs'
and don't seem to pay much heed to all that spiritual movement stuff:
They've just been killing some of them who were in their villages around KobanĂȘ :)

a army captain reported similar to me when we had a chat
this is talking about afganistan mind you, he said they were like local militia and not really a cohesive whole, more a bunch of groups sharing broadly the same goal.

It's a very long winded, but thorough, analysis
and there isn't really a tl;dr, though it is just one person's opinion and interpretation at the end of the day. But it does seem to be broadly objective, hence why it is worth a read.
His conclusion is quite stark though, given confronting this lot is inevitable
