In evolutionary terms, if it's detrimental to health, then why are your nostrils the perfect size to accept a finger?
Your ears are specifically two small for you to be able to poke a finger in there.
And this study is purely about picking out bogeys. If you're living in the wild, all manner of things might get stuck and need removing.
