your argument promotes the theory that it is something we can't change. That in fact being bullied is beneficial in later life. Being bullied knocks your self esteem, it brings you down and makes you feel unable to cope. "it makes you who you are" it turns many people into bullies, and others into neurotic introverts who are fantastic in bed and look gorgeous. If you are lucky you have support and can recover, most find a method of coping.
Just because we learn this skill does not make it a skill that is valuable or desired.
You may indeed survive rape, you may find a way to come to terms with what happened to you, this is admirable, but surly not preferable to never having been raped in the first place.
Yes rape is different, but how are you going to adjudicate what level of bullying is detrimental? At what point does it become ok to push another over in the playground, when is it alright to make the quiet one at work stay behind to do your reports?
I think we should be looking toward a world where an alpha male is a leader by example, not through fear and humiliation of others.
Yes i got bullied at school, yes i bullied others smaller than me. Just because something happens to a lot of people does not make it right.
you can make a difference, standing up for yourself is great, standing up for others is better.

I have to agree with Horatiofellatio
Bullying is a fact of life. It will never get stomped out and for people like me it was a good thing. It turned me into a balls of steel no-nonsense type bloke and made me the perfect gent I am today. Certain types of 'bullying' could do with being monitored though because some poor buggers really can't handle the rough stuff and it has a detrimental effect on their future, whereas 90% of today's 'bullying' is good old fashioned British ribbing and is only percieved as bullying because our uber PC society where even the slightest comment can get you shunned, sacked or in severe cases even a criminal record. We all just need to lighten up a bit and learn that every bell-end gets his comeback sooner or later

Perhaps I should have made it a bit clearer Kittywaste, I'm not condoning severe mental and physical torture where there is systematic abuse and the singling out of one person.
All I mean is, in the playground, the bigger boys will give you the odd dead leg. Deal with it.
And Jenkins from year 9 calling you a 'pissy poo pants' 4 times in the same week does not constitute systematic abuse.
So I guess my point, in a nut shell, is that the word bullying has become so diluted as to become almost meaningless these days.
I mean, they started going on about bullying in the Celebrity Big Brother house. It was a group of about 9 adults - all over the age of 21, and one group took a dislike to one person and made a few snide remarks.
That's bitchiness, not bullying. Don't just bandy the word around willy nilly because it makes it harder for the kids who are genuinely being victimised.
