Personally, that any of this is surprising to anyone is beyond me.
In the US, basketball, football athletes, and singers and actors are not really who I would look to for morals. I think this is only news because many of those same people seem to have selective outrage

I think with all the air time given to people like Madonna and Cher denouncing two men bragging about girls, it had to happen
The NYT had the same story in 2004 and they spiked it after complaints from Weinstein's people, which included calls from Matt Damon and Russell Crowe to the reporter. In other words, at least 13 of the 30 years of Weinstein's debauchery did not need to happen.

Some news sources are more reputable than others
It's certainly not foolproof but if even Wikipedia discounts you as a credible source you're probably doing it wrong. That having been said the Daily Mail is hilarious.
