or is Dunkirk rubbish? I haven't seen it, and haven't really enjoyed a Nolan film since Momento.

More that it might turn out to be a crap prequel. Not that I thought that much of Dunkirk either, but all the elements seem to be there. Ticking clock, thousands of lives at stake, yadda yadda.
Thinking about it some more, it could be closer to Saving Private Ryan.

the ability to recreate the sensibility of the era seems to get worse as the event recedes further away in time. That the way the actors behave, talk, and are motivated is closer to the modern day than when it happened. we forget that people had quite different values and taboos.I find a lot of recent historical movies and miniseries are basically "what if modern day people were transported back to past. This is how they'll react", rather than an attempt to recreate it. Anyway, that's my waffle on the subject

Though the further we are from an event the fewer real life references we have, as they're all dead

But the human condition doesn't. So six of one, half a dozen of another.
What get's me is the general "people in the olden days were stupid" attitude. And we're massively over sentimental these days, always harping on about feelings and shit. And another thing...

A lot of period movies etc. end up being as much about when they were made as when they were set after a decade or more has passed, as in Titanic being so 1997.
Being completely authentic isn't always important or possible, but it would be nice if people were more honest / aware about recreating history through a modern lens.
Historiography is fun.

at all is becoming more problematic since someone somewhere will be offended.

'A new play from the "Wasn't Life Great When We Were All Half-Starved And They Were Dropping Bombs On Us" school of drama...'
