We still wouldn't significantly slow extinction rates. Extinction rates are rising due to increasing population. Palm cultivation/palm oil production being a prime example.
I'm vegan because I care about animal welfare. I don't kid myself into believing it's saving the planet.

But short term, if every human primate on the planet went vegan there will be no demand for wildlife products such as pangolin scales, rhino horns and shark fins.
Unfortunately this sensible solution to human overpopulation is not too popular, even among environmentalists:
