But not entirely convinced - isn't it possible it's just a common sequence of notes? It took me a few seconds to come up with Carol of the Bells which I think is supposed to be Christmassy, not sinister. That said, it might explain why I find it fucking depressing....

Almost certainly not. Every composer for film is a composer and as familiar with the origins of Dies Irae as the Picardy third. The Dies Irae is obscure because of its antiquity, but it would have been immediately recognizable in a Church saturated culture. It is comparable to the ease with which Americans can easily discern fragments of "Dixie" or the "Star Spangled Banner". For the UK, maybe "Rule Brittania" or "God Save the Queen".
