Lemon or lime might make more sense than onion.
Baby shampoo or vegetable oil would work far better.
I can't find onion mentioned as an antidote.

I'm told Palestinians used it as a tear gas balm back in the day

I'd have tried milk; capsicum isn't soluble in water.
High proof spirits might also work, but might end up hurting even more.

I'd avoid alcohol (or any low boiling point solvent).
It will increase absorption into mucous membranes and sebaceous glands.
Yes it is a better solvent for capsaicin, which is dissolved in propan-2-ol for sprays.
