Apparently, it was kinda sorta retrospectively decided that 'Eskimo' wasn't as pejorative as was first thought.
But it had negative connotations for so long that it's staying in the bin.
The name was believed to have originated from 'eaters of raw flesh', but them word people did some more digging and decided it was much more likely to have its origins in 'weavers of snow shoes' which was seen as actually being quite a positive association due to the expertise and skill required in making the footwear.
I'm probably paraphrasing quite a bit, too tired to Bing it, but it was something along those lines. I suspect sticking to Inuit/Yupik is probably the safer bet (assuming you don't mix them up).
