Useful. For the laymen among us, why would you use a carrot? Instead of say, frozen prawns?

I wouldn't recommend it
... as soon as they thaw, they will lose what little compressive strength they had in the first place.
King Prawns on the other hand - better than carrots, if you can afford them!
