then by putting up with 'British' teeth it might be possible to save enough for a 6% downpayment on a $200k mortgage

Yes, you would have to alter the amount you were saving to take inflation into consideration
and yes, it wouldn't work if you lived somewhere that had rocketing house prices or your wage and the dental care costs didn't keep reasonable pace with other prices

I'm in the UK.
Housing costs usually rise faster than everything else.
Inexpensive means noone wants to live there, for good reason.
