But I'm not convinced - their chattering doesn't bear any resemblance to what they are hunting in many cases, and when they do it the movement is likely to give away their position.
I can believe there are cases where it's worked to their advantage, but I'd want to see a scientific study before saying it's wilful or evolved mimicry.

Given how widespread the behaviour is, I'd be surprised if it was a noticeable disadvantage. Admittedly they do some apparently random stupid shit on a regular basis, confounding attempts to make sense of the rest of their behaviour.
My current moggy climbs up small trees and chews twigs, spitting the bits out. *shrug emoji*
