This is a normal post I like your thinking
but was thinking more along the line of:

Boy loses father to unexplained foreign military adventurism, lives with family in desert, vaguely aware of distant economies and technologies.

Is convinced of messianic quest by a low-res squatting hologram (not sure how this fits the q'ranic theme, but I never claimed it was perfect)

Meets foreign religious figure (frustrated, celibate, in hiding) and learns about mysterious ancient religion promising life after death at training camp in mountains

Family killed by overwhelming foreign military power; vows revenge (understandable).

Hangs out with dubious mercenaries, preaches religion with zealotry (but little comprehension).

Is denied sexual relations (albeit with relation)

Foreign power launches completely unwarranted and completely OTT attack on peaceable planet killing millions.

Conducts espionage whilst in local attire in foreign territory (under observation by local intelligence)

Retires to terrorist training camp (under attack by foreign power), given rudimentary flight training, pilots vessel in suicide mission against great technological and economic icon, resulting in its destruction and his ensuing heroism.

Still doesn't get laid.

Foreign power attacks terrorist hideout using overwhelming firepower and technical measures, resists riding livestock and attacking with bits of string.

Etc. etc. you get the idea...

Basically, apart from the whole 9/11 thing, you'd think that the americans should be culturally predisposed to fucking love Al Q'aeda.
