The problem is
Army recruitment puts the hard sell on people who are not doing so well in school, people whose other prospects look grim. They are far worse for this in the states than over here. My cousin has not long had his passing out parade, he's a uk citizen (but the army said they would sort that out for him) Hes so dyslexic he can hardly read (but the army insist he read and sign contracts without allowing his parents or any other help to be present). I just hope they train him properly before they send him off to some ill advised war.
