it's largely an issue of nationalism underpinned by various racial groupings rather than anything to do with 'religion', although the issue is extremely muddied by the complexities of cultural/religious/ethnic ties to specific religious groupings (see my thesis)
I hate these kind of debates because for the vast majority of times the issues are brought up, those arguing have some facts or knowledge but it's all extremely limited, there's no way to verify anything and people get very angry, so what happens is the verbal equivalent of two goats rearing up and then banging their heads together.
