Looking at it further it's kind of an inadvertent snap shot of the end of an era.
The next decade saw an explosion of technology. First combustion engine by MercBenz, radiowaves, phonographs, skyscrapers....
It is a bit eerie. You could think that the photo was maybe as late as the 40's (?) love the tall ships too. I wonder how long it took for Muybridge to travel to SF?
