You can buy special microphones that look like in-ear headphones for exactly this purpose
This means you can be conspicuous, rather than carrying around what looks like a decapitated head listening to an iPod.

Ah ha ha!
I've got a set of those in my desk drawer! I've only ever used them for recording room ambience. Oh, and once I strolled around St Paul's at night with one on each lapel, recording into a minidisc (which says how long ago that was).
