But it occurs to me that had there been kkdnappings, rapes and men exposing their wienies to children at their rallies, there would be broader media coverage. Certainly no politician would support it.

It doesn't work, psychologically. It's like having an ideal forced down your throat, even if it's for a good cause.

Whether it or not you think it works
protesting is about raising awareness of an issue. The only thing its forcing you to do is to listen to an opinion. In a democracy politicians are slaves to public opinion, so if a protest gets enough support it can actually (deep breath ... dramatic pause) ... make a difference.
Also, saying "you're a fascist" is somewhat like the "yeah, well you know who else did that... THE NAZIS" argument.
