My made up theory - a lot of youtube stuff is filmed on a webcam
so you're effectively watching someone look in a mirror.
This feedback loop makes people pull faces they think are attractive.

Decent theory!
When I webcam I tend to move less, as when peeps at the other end wander about n change distance etc then their webcam is always resetting its white balance or focus, n it's just plain annoying to look at.
I enjoyed the Sarah Milican solution of a webcam hat, tho...

they're all doing it. Nicky Minaj, feckin Black Eyed Peas, those stupid "pop punk" bands. I think it originates with Gwen Bloody Stefani and may be taken from k/j-pop influence, or it's just from overdone lipsync vids that have somehow become a very annoying "style".
