once to Katowice and twice to Krakow, but do feel an affinity for the place, despite not (knowingly) having any family connections, to the point where I decided not to visit Birkenau, as I didn't think I could handle it emotionally.
Its sickening that there's a small but visible extreme right wing element in Poland, considering everything the country has been through over the decades.

My gf's family live in a place called Wawer, right on the edge of Warsaw. At Christmas time it was also the anniversary of this massacre from the second world war. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wawer_massacre It was very moving being there on the memorial day.
Also, what seems to get mentioned very little is the amount of Poles who fought for us, particularly in the RAF.
